Rich Radford was born and raised in the Mediterranean flora kingdom of the Western Cape, South Africa. In 1990, he moved to England and earned a degree in Landscape Architecture and Construction Management at Kingston University, London. Rich completed and apprenticeship in ornamental horticulture and masonry while working on award-winning gardens in and around London. He moved to the Bay Area in 1995 and later went on to form the Garden Route Company.
